VFR Travelers: Don't Skip the Vaccines

Visiting friends and relatives travelers are at higher risk than tourists — local food, longer stays, rural visits, and familiar surroundings can create a false sense of safety. Yellow fever certificate, malaria medication, and all recommended vaccines apply equally whether you're staying at a hotel or a family home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccines do I need for Nigeria?

For Nigeria, the following vaccines are required or strongly recommended: Yellow fever (required for entry — must have certificate), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Tdap, and Meningococcal ACWY (especially for travel to northern Nigeria and the meningitis belt). Malaria prevention (antimalarial medication) is essential throughout Nigeria. Rabies vaccination is recommended for longer stays or rural travel. A polio booster may be recommended depending on your vaccination history.

Is yellow fever vaccine required for Nigeria?

Yes — yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Nigeria. You must carry your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP/yellow card) as proof of vaccination. The vaccine must have been administered at least 10 days before arrival. Peel Travel Clinic is a designated yellow fever vaccination centre and can issue the official yellow card.

Do I need malaria prevention for Nigeria?

Yes — malaria is a high risk throughout Nigeria and is one of the leading causes of illness in travelers visiting Nigeria. Antimalarial medication is strongly recommended for all travelers, including those visiting family in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano. Your choice of antimalarial (Malarone/atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine) depends on your itinerary and medical history — our physician will prescribe the most appropriate option.

I am visiting family in Nigeria — do I still need vaccines?

Yes — visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travelers are actually at higher risk than typical tourists. VFR travelers tend to stay in local homes, eat home-cooked and local food, travel to rural areas, stay for longer periods, and may skip precautions because the destination feels familiar. All standard vaccines (yellow fever, malaria prevention, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Meningococcal) are recommended regardless of whether you are staying with family.

Is the meningococcal vaccine needed for Nigeria?

Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is recommended for travel to Nigeria, particularly for northern Nigeria which lies in the African meningitis belt. Meningitis risk is highest during the dry season (December to June) when dust and dry air increase transmission. Our clinic provides the Menactra and Menveo vaccines covering the A, C, Y, and W-135 strains.
