Malaria & Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Malaria — Amazon Basin Risk
Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes in the Amazon basin regions of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia. Prophylaxis is recommended for jungle lodges, river cruises, and rural communities below 1,500 metres. Cities, coastal areas, and high-altitude destinations carry minimal risk.
Our physician prescribes Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine based on your itinerary length, health history, and destination specifics.
Dengue Fever in Urban Areas
Dengue is endemic in urban and peri-urban areas across South America, transmitted by daytime-biting Aedes mosquitoes. Risk is present in cities including Lima, Bogota lowlands, Rio de Janeiro, and Guayaquil. Prevention relies on DEET-based repellent, long sleeves, and staying in air-conditioned accommodation.
Zika Virus Advisory
Zika remains a concern in tropical South America, particularly for pregnant travelers or those planning pregnancy. Transmitted by the same Aedes mosquito as dengue. Consult our physician if you are pregnant or planning to conceive — same mosquito avoidance measures apply.
Altitude Sickness Prevention
Many popular South American destinations sit at extreme altitude. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) affects most unacclimatized travelers above 2,500 metres.

Diamox (Acetazolamide) Prescription
We prescribe Diamox to help your body acclimatize faster at altitude. Start taking it 1–2 days before reaching high elevation and continue for 2 days after arriving. Our physician will review your medical history for contraindications and advise on dosing.
Acclimatization tips: arrive a day early at altitude before strenuous activity, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours, and ascend gradually when trekking.
South America Travel Vaccine FAQs
Do I need yellow fever vaccine for South America?
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to some South American countries including Brazil, Bolivia, and the Amazon regions of Ecuador. It is strongly recommended for travel to the Peruvian Amazon and jungle areas of Colombia. The International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) is valid for life after a single dose. Peel Travel Clinic is a PHAC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and issues the official certificate required for entry.
What about altitude sickness in Peru or Bolivia?
Altitude sickness is a real risk in the Andes. Cusco sits at 3,400 metres, La Paz at 3,640 metres, and many Machu Picchu trekking routes exceed 4,000 metres. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath. We prescribe Diamox (acetazolamide) to help your body acclimatize faster. We also recommend arriving a day early at altitude, staying hydrated, and ascending gradually when possible.
Is malaria a risk in South America?
Yes — malaria is present in the Amazon basin regions of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia. Antimalarial medication is recommended for travelers visiting jungle lodges, river cruises, or rural Amazon communities. Malaria prophylaxis is generally not needed for coastal cities, high-altitude destinations like Cusco or La Paz, or major urban centres like Lima, Bogota, or Buenos Aires. Our physician will assess your specific itinerary.
How many weeks before travel should I get vaccinated?
We recommend visiting Peel Travel Clinic 4–6 weeks before your South America departure. The yellow fever certificate requires 10 days to become valid before entry. Some vaccines like rabies require multiple doses over 21–28 days. Hepatitis A and typhoid need time to build immunity. For last-minute travel, call (905) 890-2757 — we offer accelerated schedules and can prioritize the most critical vaccines.
Do I need rabies vaccine for South America?
Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for adventure travelers, jungle trekkers, and anyone visiting rural areas with limited access to medical care. Bat exposure is a specific risk in caves and jungle lodges throughout the Amazon basin. Post-exposure treatment is difficult to access in remote areas of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Pre-vaccination simplifies treatment after a potential exposure — you need only 2 booster doses instead of the full series plus immunoglobulin.
