Southeast Asia Travel Vaccines
Southeast Asia is a popular travel destination offering rich culture, stunning landscapes, and incredible food. Whether you're visiting Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, or Malaysia, proper health preparation is essential. Peel Travel Clinic provides comprehensive, destination-specific vaccine recommendations.
Recommended Vaccines for Southeast Asia
Recommended for all travelers. Transmitted through contaminated food and water, prevalent throughout the region.
Recommended for all travelers, especially those planning to eat street food or spend time in rural areas.
Hepatitis B
Recommended for extended stays (>6 months), healthcare workers, or those with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
Recommended for animal exposure risk, especially remote travel where post-exposure care may be limited or expensive.
Recommended for stays >1 month in rural areas, especially during May-October peak season.
Yellow Fever
May be required depending on your itinerary and onward travel plans. Required for entry to some countries after visiting SE Asia.
Routine Vaccines
Ensure your routine vaccinations are current before travel: MMR, tetanus-diphtheria booster, and polio. These provide essential protection against diseases that may not be common in Canada.
Malaria Risk by Destination
Thailand
Low risk in Bangkok and main tourist areas. Moderate risk in border regions and forested areas. Higher risk in provinces bordering Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
Vietnam
Low risk in Ho Chi Minh City and main cities. Higher risk in central highlands and Mekong Delta regions, especially during wet season.
Philippines
Minimal risk in Manila and Cebu islands. Year-round risk in Mindanao island. Risk varies by island and season.
Cambodia
High year-round risk except in Phnom Penh (low risk). Risk is highest in forested and rural areas, especially near Laos and Thailand borders.
Laos
High risk in forested and rural areas. Risk varies with altitude. Low risk in major cities like Vientiane.
Myanmar & Malaysia
Myanmar: High risk in rural/forested areas. Malaysia: Risk varies; low in cities, higher in rural Sabah and Sarawak.
Malaria Prophylaxis Options:
- Atovaquone-Proguanil (Malarone) — Daily doses; excellent for short trips; take for 7 days after leaving the risk area
- Doxycycline — Daily doses; affordable; must avoid sun exposure; take for 4 weeks after leaving
- Mefloquine — Weekly doses; some experience side effects; take for 4 weeks after leaving
We'll recommend the best prophylaxis based on your specific destinations, trip length, and health profile.
Dengue and Other Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Dengue Fever
Dengue is endemic throughout Southeast Asia. Unlike malaria mosquitoes, dengue-carrying mosquitoes are active during the day, including dawn and dusk.
- • No vaccine available in Canada
- • Prevention through insect repellent and protective clothing is critical
- • Multiple dengue strains circulate; reinfection with different strains increases severity risk
Cholera
Cholera risk exists in areas with poor sanitation. An oral cholera vaccine is available but not routinely recommended unless there's specific outbreak risk. Food and water precautions are your best defense.
Polio Booster
While wild-type polio is not endemic in Southeast Asia, the region borders countries where transmission occurs. Ensure your polio booster is current.
Insect Protection is Critical
- • Use insect repellent containing 20-30% DEET
- • Wear long sleeves and pants, especially at dawn/dusk
- • Sleep under mosquito netting
- • Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened accommodations
- • Reapply repellent frequently, especially after swimming
