Rabies Vaccine — Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a critical protection strategy for travelers to areas where rabies is endemic and medical care may be difficult to access. Vaccination before travel simplifies post-exposure treatment and provides peace of mind in remote regions. Available at our Mississauga travel clinic.

Who Should Get the Rabies Vaccine?

Travelers to areas where rabies is common (Asia, Africa, Central and South America)

Adventure travelers (hiking, camping, caving in remote areas)

Animal handlers and wildlife workers

Veterinary professionals and laboratory workers

Cave explorers and spelunkers (bat exposure risk)

Children traveling to endemic regions (higher risk of animal bites)

Long-term travelers in remote areas with limited medical access

Pre-Exposure Vaccination Schedule

3-Dose Series

1

Day 0 — Initial dose

First injection begins building immune response

2

Day 7 — Second dose

Booster strengthens antibody response

3

Day 21 or Day 28 — Final dose

Completes series and establishes long-term protection

Simplified Post-Exposure Treatment

If you're bitten or exposed after vaccination, post-exposure treatment is significantly simplified:

  • • 2 booster doses instead of 5
  • • No rabies immunoglobulin needed
  • • Much faster and less invasive

Timeline to Protection

Immunity begins developing after the first dose but is fully established after completing the 3-dose series. Plan your vaccination at least 3–4 weeks before departure.

Why Get Vaccinated Before Travel?

Rabies Immunoglobulin Availability

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is often unavailable or in short supply in developing countries. Pre-exposure vaccination eliminates the need for RIG post-exposure.

Simpler Post-Exposure Treatment

Without pre-exposure vaccination, post-exposure prophylaxis requires 5 doses over 28 days plus rabies immunoglobulin. With PrEP, only 2 booster doses are needed.

Time to Reach Medical Care

In remote areas, accessing qualified medical care quickly can be impossible. Vaccination before travel provides protection while you arrange evacuation to a facility offering post-exposure treatment.

Special Consideration for Children

Children are at higher risk of animal bites and may not report bites immediately. Pre-exposure vaccination provides critical protection for families traveling to endemic regions.
