Travel Vaccines for Nepal
Nepal draws travelers for Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, Pokhara, and the temples of Kathmandu. Travel health preparation for Nepal involves both standard travel vaccines and altitude medicine — making an early visit to a travel medicine specialist essential.
Our Mississauga travel clinic specializes in trekking and adventure travel health, including Diamox prescriptions for altitude sickness prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions
What vaccines do I need for Nepal?
For Nepal, the following vaccines are recommended: Hepatitis A (all travelers), Typhoid (all travelers, especially for street food and rural areas), Hepatitis B (most travelers), Tdap (if not current), and Rabies (strongly recommended for trekkers, long stays, and anyone with likely animal contact — Nepal has significant dog bite risk on trekking trails). Japanese Encephalitis is considered for longer stays or rural/lowland travel.
Do I need altitude sickness medication for Nepal?
Altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness, AMS) is a significant concern for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, and other high-altitude destinations. Diamox (acetazolamide) is a prescription medication that can prevent and treat AMS. It must be started 1–2 days before ascent. Our travel medicine physician can prescribe Diamox and advise on the correct dose — typically 125–250mg twice daily.
Is malaria a risk in Nepal?
Malaria risk in Nepal is mainly limited to the Terai lowland areas (border region with India) below 1,200 metres, primarily June to September. Kathmandu, Pokhara, and most trekking routes above 1,500 metres carry no malaria risk. If your itinerary includes Chitwan, Bardia, or the Terai, discuss malaria prophylaxis with our physician.
Is rabies a concern for trekkers in Nepal?
Yes — rabies is endemic in Nepal and dog bites on trekking trails are a genuine risk. Nepal has one of the highest rabies exposures for trekkers globally. If bitten abroad without pre-exposure vaccination, you would need post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) including rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), which is often unavailable or unreliable in remote trekking areas. Pre-exposure vaccination (3-dose series) is strongly recommended for trekkers and long-stay travelers.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Nepal?
Nepal requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country within the past 6 days. Travelers arriving from Canada do not need yellow fever vaccination for Nepal unless their itinerary includes a stopover in an endemic country.
