Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccines do I need for Ghana?

For Ghana: Yellow fever is required for entry (must carry ICVP certificate). Malaria prevention is essential throughout Ghana. Also recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Tdap, and Meningococcal ACWY (especially for northern Ghana and the meningitis belt during dry season). Rabies vaccination is considered for longer stays or rural travel.

Is yellow fever vaccine required for Ghana?

Yes — yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana. You must carry your International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card/ICVP) as proof. The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before arrival. Peel Travel Clinic is a designated yellow fever vaccination centre.

Is malaria a risk in Accra?

Yes — malaria risk is present throughout Ghana including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and all other regions. Unlike some African countries where urban areas have lower risk, Ghana's capital Accra has documented malaria transmission. Antimalarial medication is recommended for all travelers to Ghana regardless of destination within the country.

I am visiting family in Ghana — what vaccines do I need?

VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travelers need all the same vaccines as any other traveler — yellow fever certificate, malaria prevention, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal. VFR travelers often face higher risk because they may stay in local homes, eat local food, visit rural areas, and stay longer. Do not skip vaccines because the destination feels familiar.

What is the best antimalarial for Ghana?

Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) is the most commonly used antimalarial for Ghana and is well-tolerated with minimal side effects. It is taken daily starting 1–2 days before arrival and continuing for 7 days after leaving the malaria area. Doxycycline is a lower-cost alternative but requires sun precautions. Mefloquine (Lariam) is taken weekly and is an option but has more potential side effects. Our physician will advise the best option based on your trip length and medical history.
