Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need vaccines to travel to Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is generally low-risk for most travelers staying in tourist areas. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended for all travelers, along with ensuring your routine vaccines (Tdap, MMR) are up to date. Rabies vaccination is recommended for adventure travelers, rural stays, or anyone with likely animal contact. Malaria prophylaxis is not needed for standard tourist areas but may be considered for remote Chirripó or border regions.
Is malaria a risk in Central America?
Malaria risk in Central America varies significantly by country and activity. Costa Rica, Belize, and Panama have low overall risk for typical tourists. Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador have higher risk particularly outside cities. Travelers venturing into rural or jungle areas should discuss malaria prophylaxis with our travel medicine physician.
Do I need yellow fever vaccine for Central America?
Yellow fever vaccination is not required or routinely recommended for Central America, with the exception of Panama for travelers visiting the Darién province near the Colombian border. However, if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, some Central American countries may require proof of vaccination on entry.
How far in advance should I get vaccines before travel to Central America?
We recommend visiting our clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses (Hepatitis B, rabies) and need time to complete the series. Typhoid vaccine should be given at least 2 weeks before travel. Last-minute travelers can still receive important single-dose vaccines like Hepatitis A — book as early as possible.
What should I know about dengue fever in Central America?
Dengue fever is present throughout Central America and transmitted by daytime-biting Aedes mosquitoes. There is no specific vaccine approved in Canada for dengue for first-time travelers. The best prevention is using DEET-based repellents (30% concentration), wearing light-coloured long clothing, and staying in screened or air-conditioned accommodation.
