Pre-Travel Consultation — Mississauga
A pre-travel consultation with a travel medicine specialist is the single most important step you can take before an international trip. At Peel Travel Clinic, our physician conducts a thorough risk assessment based on your destination, itinerary, health status, and planned activities — then builds a personalized protection plan covering vaccines, malaria prevention, and practical travel health advice.
Whether you are heading to India, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, or South America, a consultation ensures you receive the right travel vaccinations on the right schedule — and nothing you don't need.

Itinerary & Risk Assessment
Your travel doctor reviews every destination on your itinerary — including transit stops — to identify region-specific disease risks. Urban hotels carry different risks than rural homestays, and a two-week beach holiday differs from a six-month backpacking trip. We factor in your accommodation type, planned activities (hiking, diving, wildlife encounters), season of travel, and current outbreak advisories.
Vaccine Recommendations
Based on your risk profile, we recommend specific travel vaccines — from routine boosters like Tdap and MMR to destination-specific vaccines including yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis. We check your existing immunization records to avoid unnecessary doses.
Prescriptions & Malaria Prevention
If your itinerary includes malaria-endemic regions, we prescribe the appropriate malaria prophylaxis — Malarone, Doxycycline, or Chloroquine — based on drug resistance patterns at your destination. We also prescribe standby antibiotics for travellers' diarrhea and discuss when to use them.
Travel Health Kit & Safety Advice
You leave your appointment with a recommended travel health kit list (insect repellent containing DEET, oral rehydration salts, basic first-aid supplies, sunscreen), plus practical guidance on safe food and water practices, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness, jet lag management, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.
Who Should Book a Pre-Travel Consultation?
A travel health consultation is strongly recommended if any of the following apply to you:
Traveling with children? See our dedicated guide on travel vaccines for children.
When to Book Your Appointment
4–6 weeks before departure is the ideal window. This allows time for multi-dose vaccine series (hepatitis B requires three doses over 4–6 months; an accelerated schedule is available), ensures your yellow fever certificate is valid on arrival (10-day activation period), and gives malaria prophylaxis enough lead time.
2–3 weeks before departure is still worthwhile. Most single-dose vaccines — hepatitis A, injectable typhoid, meningitis — provide meaningful protection within 2 weeks. We can start multi-dose series and you can complete them at your destination or upon return.
Leaving in days? Don't skip the consultation. Same-day vaccines still offer partial protection, and malaria pills, travellers' diarrhea prescriptions, and health advice are immediately useful. Visit our last-minute travel vaccines page for urgent appointment details.

Pre-Travel Consultation — Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during a pre-travel consultation?
During your pre-travel consultation at Peel Travel Clinic, our physician reviews your complete travel itinerary, medical history, current medications, and immunization records. Based on your destination, planned activities, and duration of stay, we recommend specific vaccines, prescribe malaria prophylaxis if needed, provide a travellers' diarrhea kit, and offer destination-specific health advice covering food and water safety, insect precautions, altitude sickness, and other region-specific risks.
How far in advance should I book a travel consultation?
We recommend booking your pre-travel consultation at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines, such as hepatitis B, rabies pre-exposure, and Japanese encephalitis, require multiple doses spaced weeks apart. Yellow fever vaccine needs a minimum 10-day lead time before the certificate becomes valid. That said, last-minute appointments are available — even a same-day visit is far better than travelling unprotected. Call (905) 890-2757 to book.
What should I bring to my travel health appointment?
Bring your passport (to confirm exact destinations and transit countries), your detailed itinerary including accommodation type and planned activities, your immunization records or yellow vaccination booklet, a list of current medications and known allergies, and your insurance information. If you are a registered patient of Dr. Saldanha, your medical history is already on file, which streamlines the consultation.
How much does a pre-travel consultation cost?
The consultation fee covers the physician's time for itinerary risk assessment, vaccine recommendations, prescriptions, and travel health counselling. Vaccine costs are separate and vary by product. Many employer health plans and private insurance plans cover travel vaccines and consultation fees — check with your provider. We issue detailed receipts for insurance reimbursement. Call (905) 890-2757 for current pricing.
Do I need vaccines for all international travel?
Not all destinations require special vaccines. Travel to Western Europe, the US, Australia, and Japan typically requires only routine immunizations. However, travel to South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean often requires destination-specific vaccines such as yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A, and meningitis. Even popular all-inclusive resort destinations may carry risks for hepatitis A, typhoid, and travellers' diarrhea. A consultation ensures you know exactly what protection you need.
Can I see the same doctor for both my regular health care and travel health?
Yes. Dr. Saldanha is both a family physician and a travel medicine specialist. Registered patients benefit from a physician who already knows their medical history, medications, allergies, and immunization status — unlike standalone travel clinics where the provider has no access to your records. This integrated approach leads to safer, more personalized travel health recommendations.
