Why Children Need Travel Vaccines

Increased Vulnerability

Children are more vulnerable to travel-related diseases than adults. Their immune systems are still developing, and they may lack immunity to diseases that don't circulate in Canada.

Incomplete Routine Vaccination

Younger children may not have completed their full routine vaccination series. We verify their immunization records and ensure they're fully protected before international travel.

Destination-Specific Protection

Different regions carry different health risks. We tailor vaccine recommendations based on your family's specific destinations, travel activities, and your child's age.

Common Travel Vaccines for Children

Hepatitis A

From age 1+ — Protects against hepatitis A, commonly transmitted through contaminated food and water in many travel destinations.

Typhoid

From age 2+ — Protects against typhoid fever, spread through contaminated food and water, especially in South Asia and Africa.

Yellow Fever

From age 9 months+ — May be required for entry to certain African and South American countries.

Rabies

All ages — Especially important for children who may approach animals (dogs, monkeys, bats). Highly recommended for travel to high-risk regions.

Meningococcal

Multiple doses depending on age — Protects against meningococcal meningitis, common in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Routine Vaccines

We ensure MMR, polio, and other childhood vaccines are up to date before international travel.

Tips for Traveling with Children

Food and Water Safety

Stick to bottled or boiled water, avoid raw or undercooked foods, and be cautious with street food. Teach children good hand hygiene, especially before meals and after bathroom use.

Insect Protection

Use age-appropriate insect repellent, dress children in light, long-sleeved clothing in insect-prone areas, and use mosquito netting over beds. Mosquitoes transmit dengue, malaria, and yellow fever.

Sun Protection

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+, reapply after swimming, wear hats and sunglasses, and limit sun exposure during peak hours (10 AM - 4 PM).

Keep Medications Accessible

Carry medications in original labeled containers, keep them in a cool, dry place, bring extra copies of prescriptions, and know how to manage common travel illnesses like diarrhea and fever.
