Travel Vaccines for Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a destination for the growing Bangladeshi-Canadian community in Mississauga and the GTA, as well as for business, humanitarian, and cultural travel. Dhaka, Sylhet, and Chittagong are the main destinations, with the Chittagong Hill Tracts offering adventure travel.
Travel health preparation is important — food and water-borne illness risk is high, dengue is endemic, and cholera outbreaks occur. Visit our Mississauga travel clinic at least 6 weeks before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What vaccines do I need for Bangladesh?
For Bangladesh: Hepatitis A and Typhoid are essential for all travelers. Hepatitis B is recommended for most travelers. Tdap should be current. Cholera (Dukoral) is recommended particularly during monsoon season (June–October) or if visiting flood-prone or rural areas. Rabies vaccination is recommended for longer stays, rural travel, or children. Japanese Encephalitis is considered for rural travel or stays over 1 month. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travel to Chittagong Hill Tracts in the southeast.
Is cholera a risk in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh has periodic cholera outbreaks, particularly during and after monsoon flooding (June–October). The oral cholera vaccine, Dukoral, also provides approximately 60% cross-protection against travellers' diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) — the most common cause of travellers' diarrhea globally. Dukoral is taken as 2 oral doses at least 1 week apart, completing the series at least 1 week before travel. It is available at our Mississauga travel clinic.
Is malaria a risk in Dhaka?
Dhaka and most of Bangladesh (including Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Chittagong city) are considered low or no-risk for malaria. Malaria risk is mainly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh (Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari), which are forest and hill areas. If your itinerary includes these areas, malaria prophylaxis is recommended. For VFR travelers staying in urban areas, malaria prophylaxis is generally not required.
Is dengue fever a risk in Bangladesh?
Yes — dengue fever is endemic in Bangladesh and outbreaks occur regularly, particularly in Dhaka and during the monsoon season. Bangladesh has experienced some of its worst dengue outbreaks in recent years. No dengue vaccine is approved in Canada for first-time travelers. Prevention is DEET-based repellent, long clothing, and screened accommodation — particularly important in Dhaka.
I am visiting family in Bangladesh — what precautions should I take?
VFR travelers to Bangladesh need all the same precautions as tourists: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Dukoral (cholera/ETEC protection), Tdap, Rabies (if at risk). Do not drink tap water — use only bottled or boiled water throughout your stay, even at family homes. Dengue and food-borne illness risk is significant in urban areas including Dhaka and Sylhet. Start malaria prophylaxis if visiting the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
