MMR Vaccine — Essential Protection for Travelers

Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) are serious viral diseases that can cause severe complications. Peel Travel Clinic offers MMR vaccination and immunity testing (titer) to ensure you are protected before international travel. Available at our Mississauga travel clinic.

What Are Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?

These are highly contagious viral diseases. Measles causes fever, cough, and rash and can lead to encephalitis, pneumonia, and death. Mumps causes fever, swelling of salivary glands, and can cause deafness and meningitis. Rubella (German measles) causes rash and fever and can severely harm a developing fetus if contracted during pregnancy. Vaccination is highly effective at preventing all three diseases.

Measles outbreaks continue worldwide, making immunity verification essential before international travel.

Who Needs the MMR Vaccine?

  • ✓ All international travelers born after 1970
  • ✓ Anyone with uncertain vaccination history or unknown immunity status
  • ✓ Healthcare workers and those exposed to measles
  • ✓ Those planning to become pregnant (vaccine before pregnancy, not during)

Vaccine Details

Dose

Two doses of MMR vaccine, administered 4+ weeks apart

Protection

Immunity develops 2-3 weeks after each dose. Two doses provide lifelong protection for most.

Duration

Lifelong immunity after two doses. One dose provides ~95% protection against measles.

Cost & Coverage

For current pricing, see our full vaccination fees page. Most travel vaccines are not covered by OHIP but may be reimbursable through private insurance or employer benefit plans — we provide official receipts for all vaccinations.

MMR Immunity Testing (Titer)

If you are uncertain about your MMR immunity, a blood test (titer) can check for antibodies. If you lack immunity to any component (measles, mumps, or rubella), vaccination is recommended before travel.

Titer cost: approximately $50–$100. Results typically available within a few days. Our physician will review results and recommend vaccination if needed.

Side Effects

Most people experience no or mild side effects:

Mild (Common)

Soreness at injection site, low-grade fever (within 5–12 days), rash, joint pain — resolve within a few days to weeks.

Serious (Very Rare)

Severe allergic reactions are very rare. Discuss with our physician if you have known allergies to vaccine components (gelatin, neomycin).

Who Should Not Get the MMR Vaccine?

  • • Pregnant women (vaccination before pregnancy is preferred)
  • • People with severe allergies to vaccine components (gelatin, neomycin)
  • • Immunocompromised individuals (discuss with physician)
  • • Those with a history of severe allergic reaction to this vaccine

A blood test (titer) can verify immunity without vaccination. Discuss your full medical history with our physician.
