Chikungunya Vaccine — Mississauga

Chikungunya is a viral illness spread by Aedes mosquitoes — the same mosquitoes that transmit dengue and Zika. There is no specific cure or antiviral treatment. Canada approved Ixchiq, the world's first chikungunya vaccine, in 2024 — making prevention now possible for at-risk travelers. Available at our Mississauga travel clinic.

Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary. Because Ixchiq is a live attenuated vaccine, some people experience a mild chikungunya-like reaction:

 • • Injection site pain, redness, or swelling
 • • Fatigue
 • • Headache
 • • Muscle aches (myalgia)
 • • Joint pain (arthralgia) — can mimic mild chikungunya illness, typically resolves within a week

Serious reactions are very rare. Our nurses will monitor you for 15 minutes after vaccination. Because it is a live vaccine, it is contraindicated in immunocompromised patients and pregnant women.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs the chikungunya vaccine?

Ixchiq is recommended for adults 18 and older who are travelling to regions with active chikungunya transmission, including the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America. It is particularly important during active outbreak periods. It is not suitable for immunocompromised individuals or pregnant women as it is a live attenuated vaccine.

What are the side effects of the chikungunya vaccine?

Common side effects include injection site pain, fatigue, headache, muscle aches (myalgia), and joint pain (arthralgia). These can sometimes mimic a mild chikungunya-like illness and typically resolve within a few days. Serious adverse events are rare. Our staff monitor all patients for 15 minutes following vaccination.

How far in advance do I need the chikungunya vaccine before travel?

Ixchiq is a single-dose vaccine. We recommend receiving it at least 2–4 weeks before travel to allow your immune system to build full protection. Ideally, book your travel health consultation at Peel Travel Clinic 4–6 weeks before departure so all vaccines can be properly timed.

Is the chikungunya vaccine covered by OHIP?

Ixchiq is not covered by OHIP. For current pricing, see our vaccination fees page. It may be partially or fully reimbursable under private health insurance or employer benefit plans. We provide official receipts for insurance submission.
