Travel Health Guide: Pakistan
Travelers to Pakistan need typhoid, hepatitis A, and an up-to-date polio booster (may be required for entry). Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for most regions outside Islamabad and high-altitude areas.
Essential Vaccines for Pakistan
Polio (IPV Booster)
May be required for entry/exit — Pakistan is one of the last polio-endemic countries
Hepatitis A
Essential for all travelers — high food/waterborne transmission risk
Typhoid
Highly recommended — drug-resistant typhoid (XDR) has been reported in Pakistan
Routine Boosters
MMR, tetanus-diphtheria, COVID-19
Recommended Vaccines
Hepatitis B
For extended stays or potential medical treatment
Rabies
For rural travel and animal exposure risk
Japanese Encephalitis
Consider for extended stays in Sindh or Punjab provinces during monsoon
Cholera (Dukoral)
Consider for flood-affected areas or humanitarian work
Malaria Risk Assessment
Malaria risk exists in most areas below 2500m, including Sindh, Balochistan, and KPK provinces. Urban Islamabad and Rawalpindi have lower risk. We assess your itinerary to determine appropriate prophylaxis.
Polio — Entry/Exit Requirement
Pakistan is one of the few remaining countries with circulating wild poliovirus. Some countries may require proof of recent polio vaccination when departing Pakistan. Ensure your polio immunization is current before travel.
Drug-Resistant Typhoid (XDR)
Pakistan has reported extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid cases, particularly in Sindh province. The injectable typhoid conjugate vaccine (Typbar-TCV) provides stronger protection than the oral vaccine. We’ll recommend the best option based on your itinerary.
VFR Travelers to Pakistan
Many of our patients travel to Pakistan to visit family. VFR travelers face longer exposure, less controlled food/water environments, and may underestimate familiar risks. Full vaccination protection is essential regardless of prior residence.
Food, Water & Hygiene
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Avoid ice, raw salads, and unpeeled fruit. Street food carries significant typhoid and hepatitis A risk. Hand hygiene is critical.
When to Get Vaccinated
Start 4–6 weeks before departure. Polio booster should be documented within the past 12 months for travel to Pakistan.
